My latest publication is now available. I think it could be of interest to some forum members, as it is a republication of a very rare 19th century book written by a showman performer who traveled (often by foot) around the UK fairs, working with other showmen and sometimes performing in his own booth. Here is some information on the book, and a scan of the cover.

The Life of a Showman, by David Prince Miller. Based on the Second Edition, circa 1856. Edited, with an essay and other additional material on Miller, by Martin MacGilp.

David Prince Miller was a showman, involved in a range of exhibitions and theatricals. His record of achievements veered between being a moderately successful theatrical manager, and a bankrupt, who spent some time in debtor’s jail. Throughout his long professional life, he continued to return to some of his core skills, which included conjuring, Punch and Judy, and marionettes. He had strong associations with Glasgow and with some of the glory days of Glasgow Fair, but also performed throughout the UK, often walking some distance between Fairs. Miller’s account of his life, largely as a travelling showman, has been out of print for over 150 years. Copies very rarely turn up in the antiquarian book market, and when they do, they are very expensive. This publication brings together Miller’s lively text, a new essay on Miller and his life, and additional information on his children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren, particularly those who became involved with theatricals. With over 350 pages, the book has been fully-indexed, along with the addition of a genealogical chart, and 39 illustrations, some of which are being published for the first time. ISBN 978-0-9571881-2-9

The retail price is £45.95, but the book is available direct from our website at www.gilpress.co.uk for £35.95 plus shipping.
