Dear All

We are pleased to announce that we have started work on an exciting new upgrade to The Rides List which we feel is going to be of great benefit to members, the Moderation Team and will improve the information and photos we have available.

Essentially the Rides List will be duplicated and available in two versions as follows:

1) Restricted Rides List - This Rides List will be restricted, as  now, to Forum Supporters. Each entry will consist of a single topic (no replies). The topic will contain ride details, history, owner etc and a single photo of the ride (single photo negotiable). This is basically what the First Post (topic) is now. The entire Restricted Rides List will be READ ONLY, that is Supporters can see each entry but cannot create an entry or reply to the existing topics. It will be a purely read only reference list. Each entry will also contain a link to the corresponding Free Rides List entry.

2) Free Rides List - Almost a carbon copy of the current Rides List - that is the main topic with all the replies, photos etc  BUT with the Ride Details, Owner, history etc removed. This list would be available to ALL members who would be free to create their own entry (if a Ride didn't exist) and reply to existing entries.  Each entry will also contain a link to the corresponding Restricted Rides List entry.

We see major advantages:

1) ALL members, whether a supporter or not would be able to supply information, updates, new owner details, new rides etc - they would access the free rides list and post freely. Moderators would then copy information or photos. We believe this would increase the information and photos we receive which would benefit the Restricted Rides List

2) Moderation would be greatly reduced/simplified. Currently posts made to the rides list are kept hidden until approved by a Moderator. This would not be necessary as the Restricted List would be read only. As members would be more or less free to post anything in the Free Rides List, the posts would not need to be pre-approved.  (Obviously normal forum rules would need to be enforced - copyright etc)

3) When the restrictions were removed on Rides List replies i.e. allowing all replies, there was a danger that the Rides List could become untidy and cluttered. By using two rides lists we negate this problem. The Restricted List will always be tidy as there will be no replies and as the Free Rides List is basically a free for all, it won't matter if it becomes untidy/cluttered.

We also see some possible disadvantages

It is a colossal amount of work. However it will be done in manageable chunks with the first phase hopefully being live within the month (although you will see some functionality, hopefully within a week.)

We would ask that you understand the full project won't be completed for quite some time and ask that you are patient in the meantime!

Later this week you should start to see some Rides appearing in the new Free Rides List - Initially it will be just a few as we work on duplicating each entry and editing to remove the information that will remain in the Restricted Rides List (Ride details, history etc) As Rides appear in the Free Rides List, you will lose the ability to reply to the corresponding Restricted Rides List entry - your reply should be made on the "Free Rides List"

Q) I have a photo and/or update for a Ride that hasn't yet been transferred to the Free List, what do I do?

A) You have two options (i) Wait a short while until it appears (ii) Send me a private message and I will transfer over the ride you want to update

The only other thing to watch for concerns recent/future updates to the Restricted Rides List:

If you have posted to the Restricted Rides in the past week, or you post before an entry is fully functional in the Free Rides List, depending on when you post and when I copied, there is a chance your reply/update/photo WON'T be copied. I would ask that you make a note if something you post DOESN'T make it across. If this happens you can either ask me to re-copy the entry or you can post your update again in the Free Rides List.

As stated, this is a major task - it will by necessity take some time to complete and in the meantime there may be hiccups along the way, but we believe ultimately it will be worth the short term headaches.

Your support, patience and cooperation are much appreciated.

All the best

Bill

The first batch of "Free Rides List" entries are now available. More will become available over the coming weeks as we move and edit more rides.

Forum Supporters are able to access the Restricted Rides List as usual and have full access to all the Ride details we have - owner, previous owners, manufacturer etc.

Non-Supporters can access any photos we have for the rides we have so far published.

Forum Supporters - If you wish to update any information on the Rides List or add photos, please use the "Free Rides List" if an entry is available for that Ride - If the ride hasn't yet been copied, please use the Restricted Rides List

Non-Supporters - If you wish to update information or add photos and the ride is available in the "Free Rides List" please post! If the ride isn't yet available you can either (i) Wait until it appears or (ii) Send me a Pm asking for it to be moved as a special case. I'll move it and you can post.

Any questions, please ask!
